Usually I teach music theory as part of piano lessons or harmonica lessons. But I also teach it aside from the consideration of a specific instrument. When theory is isolated as a stand alone topic, I'm often acting as a tutor for high school or college students taking music theory classes in school for credit. But sometimes I teach music theory lessons to instrumentalists or composers or song writers. Their main instrument may be guitar, drums, trumpet, violin, or any other instrument. The elements of music theory apply globally. Chord theory, scales, arranging, transposing for vocalists, computer composition, song writing, and understanding the elements of improvisational construction in jazz, blues, or rock n roll soloing are just some of the subjects that fall under the rubric of Music Theory. My rates and policies are the same for theory students as they are for piano students. Please click on Piano Lessons for information about rates, when, where, and how I teach and more. Most of the piano lesson information will also be relevant to music theory students. Call me at (760) 943-8684 or email me at jerry@jazzgrew.com and I'll be glad to arrange a free music theory lesson if you haven't previously taken lessons with me.
